Iveco 016B – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Injector 1 Control Circuit Malfunction
Issue description
The engine's control module has detected an electrical anomaly—such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to battery voltage, or abnormal resistance—in the control circuit responsible for firing the fuel injector on cylinder #1.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at Injector 1 for chafing, melting, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
Continuity Test: Disconnect the ECM and the Injector 1 harness connector. Check for continuity on the control wires between the ECM terminals and the injector connector. Ensure there is no extraneous resistance.
Short Circuit Test: Check for insulation between the two control wires. Test both wires for a short to ground or a short to battery voltage.
Injector Solenoid Test: Measure the internal resistance of the Injector 1 solenoid coil using a multimeter. If the resistance is out of specification (indicating an internal open or short), the injector itself is the point of failure.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the engine cover/tappet cover to gain access to the fuel rail and injectors.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel pipe connecting the fuel manifold to Injector 1. Cap the fittings to prevent contamination.
Remove Injector
Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the injector fastening screws and the mounting bracket. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head seat.
Clean and Prep
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head. Crucial: Always remove the old copper sealing washer and install a brand-new one on the new injector.
Install New Injector
Fit the new injector into the cylinder head seat, ensuring the fuel feed hole is correctly oriented facing the fuel manifold side.
Torque to Spec
Reinstall the mounting bracket. Use a dynamometric (torque) wrench to tighten the injector fastening screws gradually and alternately to the exact OEM torque specification to prevent cylinder compression leaks.
Reassembly
Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector. Reinstall the engine covers and reconnect the battery.
Programming
Use a diagnostic scan tool to program the new injector's IMA code (Injector Quantity Adjustment code) into the EDC. Note: Failure to program this code will result in poor running conditions and will trigger a secondary fault code (017F: Incorrect recording or no record of IMA-injector codes).
Clear and Test
Clear the 016B fault code and test-run the engine to verify the repair.
