016C

Iveco 016C – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque drop limit in cylinder 1

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the power contribution (torque) from cylinder 1 is significantly lower than expected compared to the other cylinders. This is often accompanied by a failure to meet the minimum required number of injections or an open circuit/short in the injector control channel.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco EuroCargo
  • Iveco Tector
  • Iveco Daily
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Perform a cylinder balance test using a diagnostic scan tool to confirm if cylinder 1 is underperforming

  2. Inspect the injector wiring harness and connectors for cylinder 1 for open circuits, shorts to ground, or loose connections

  3. Perform a mechanical compression test on cylinder 1 to rule out internal engine damage (e.g., worn piston rings, burnt valves)

  4. Check the fuel filter water separator for water contamination, which can cause injector failure and fueling issues

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the vehicle's battery. Clean the area around the cylinder 1 fuel injector to prevent debris from entering the engine.

  2. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 1 injector. Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and the injector hold-down clamp/bracket.

  3. Extraction

Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  4. Cleaning

Clean the injector bore and seat in the cylinder head thoroughly. Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed and not stuck in the bore.

  5. Installation

Install the new or remanufactured injector using a new copper washer/seal. Torque the injector hold-down bolts and high-pressure fuel lines to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  7. Injector Coding

Connect a diagnostic scan tool. You must code the new injector to the ECU. Enter the IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) code printed on the top of the new injector into the ECU for cylinder 1.

  8. Verification

Clear the 016C fault code, prime the fuel system, start the engine, and perform a test drive to verify the repair.
