Iveco 016E – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU): Minimum required number of injections not performed

A critical failure in the fuel delivery system where the engine control unit cannot command the injectors to fire the minimum number of times required to sustain engine operation. This is almost always caused by an electrical short circuit in the unit injector solenoids or the internal injector wiring harness, which takes down an entire bank of injectors.

   Scan the ECU for accompanying bank-specific short circuit codes (e.g., 0171 for Bank 1 or 0173 for Bank 2)

   Isolate the affected bank (Bank 1 shares a circuit for injectors 1, 2, and 3; Bank 2 shares a circuit for injectors 4, 5, and 6)

   Remove the cylinder head cover and visually inspect the internal injector wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or bare wires shorting against the cylinder head

   Test the resistance of the wiring harness from the ECU connector to the injectors using a multimeter

   Test the resistance of each individual unit injector solenoid to rule out an internal short within the injector itself

   Disconnect batteries

   Disconnect the vehicle's batteries to prevent electrical arcing or ECU damage.

   Remove cylinder head cover

   Remove the cylinder head cover to gain access to the unit injectors and the internal wiring harness.

   Disconnect unit injectors

   Disconnect the electrical connectors from all unit injectors on the affected bank.

   Replace wiring harness

   If the wiring harness failed the continuity/short test or shows physical damage, carefully unroute and remove the old harness from the cylinder head.

   Install new wiring harness

   Install the new OEM injector wiring harness, ensuring it is routed correctly and secured away from moving valvetrain components.

   Replace faulty unit injector

   If an individual unit injector failed the resistance test (internal short), remove the hold-down clamp and extract the faulty unit injector. Install a replacement unit injector with new O-rings and seals.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the harness to the injectors.

   Reinstall cylinder head cover

   Reinstall the cylinder head cover, ensuring the gasket is properly seated, and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.

   Finalize repair

   Reconnect the batteries, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, and run the engine to verify the repair.
