Iveco 018B – Engine Control Module: Short circuit to the on-board network of the control circuit of the throttle of the recirculation valve

The Engine Control Unit has detected an electrical short to power (the vehicle's on-board network voltage / VCC / battery voltage) in the control circuit of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) throttle valve actuator.

   Trace the wiring harness from the Engine Control Unit (EDC) to the EGR throttle valve actuator. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas where the wire might be shorting to a power source.

   Disconnect the plug at the EGR throttle valve. Inspect the pins and terminals for corrosion, water ingress, or pushed-out pins that could bridge the power and control circuits.

   With a multimeter, test the control wire for continuity to power (VCC) while disconnected from the actuator. If voltage is present on the control wire when it shouldn't be, the short is in the harness.

   If the wiring harness tests good, the short circuit is likely internal to the EGR throttle valve actuator's electronic board.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Valve

   Locate the EGR throttle valve assembly on the intake/EGR tract of the engine.

   Disconnect Electronics

   Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR throttle valve actuator.

   Harness Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire and apply heat-shrink tubing, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

   Replace the Valve

   If the short is internal to the actuator: Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR throttle valve to the intake/EGR piping. Remove the old valve and discard the old gaskets. Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly. Install the new EGR throttle valve with new gaskets and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical connector to the actuator.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the vehicle's OBD/diagnostic port and clear the 018B fault code.

   Test Drive

   Start the engine and perform a test drive to ensure the code does not return and that the engine operates without torque limitations.
