Iveco 01B3 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control / Engine ECU) or Body Controller (BC): Open Information CAN-line 'L'
Issue description
There is an open circuit, physical break, or complete loss of communication on the CAN Low (CAN L) wire of the vehicle's Controller Area Network (CAN bus).
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Iveco Daily
- Iveco Eurocargo
- Iveco Stralis
- Iveco Trakker
Check the cause
Check battery voltage and ensure terminals are tight and free of corrosion, as low voltage or a discharged battery can cause phantom CAN faults.
Perform a CAN Bus resistance test by disconnecting the battery and measuring resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (pins 21 and 22 on 30-pin connectors, pins 6 and 14 on standard OBD). A healthy bus reads 60 Ohms; 120 Ohms confirms an open circuit.
Visually inspect the wiring harnesses for chafing, rubbing, or broken insulation, paying special attention to the green CAN L wire where it passes through corrugated tubing, near the gearbox, or along the chassis rails.
Repair steps
Isolate the Power
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent shorting any modules during the repair.
Trace the CAN L Circuit
Using a wiring diagram specific to the chassis, trace the green CAN L wire from the EDC to the Body Controller and diagnostic port.
Locate and Repair the Break
Once the physical break or corroded connector pin is found, cut back the damaged wire to clean copper.
Solder and Seal
Solder a new section of wire if necessary. Do not use cheap crimp connectors on CAN bus lines, as resistance changes will distort the data signal. Seal the repair with marine-grade, adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing.
Verify Resistance
Before reconnecting the battery, test the CAN bus resistance again at the diagnostic port. It must now read 60 Ohms.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic scanner (such as Iveco EASY or a compatible heavy-duty tool) to clear the 01B3 historic fault code. Test drive to ensure the EDC warning light remains off.
Parts you might need
(3)Generic CAN bus wiring repair materials
Automotive-grade twisted pair wire, solder, heat shrink
Engine Control Unit (EDC)
OEM Part number varies strictly by VIN/Engine serial. Only replace if the internal CAN transceiver is proven to be burnt out.
Body Controller (BCM)
OEM Part number varies by VIN. Replaced only if the internal terminating resistor or transceiver is damaged.
