01B7

Iveco 01B7 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN information bus busy

Issue description

The CAN bus is overloaded with data traffic or suffering from a physical layer malfunction (such as a short circuit, wiring damage, or a malfunctioning module spamming the network), which prevents normal communication.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Tector Engines
  • Iveco Cursor Engines
  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Eurocargo

Check the cause

  1. Check System Voltage: Verify the vehicle's battery and charging system for voltage drops or spikes.

  2. Physical Layer Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the CAN High (CAN H) and CAN Low (CAN L) lines with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 Ohms).

  3. Check for Shorts: Test for continuity between CAN H and ground, CAN L and ground, and between CAN H and CAN L to rule out shorted wires.

  4. Module Isolation (Ping Test): If the wiring is intact, disconnect modules on the affected CAN network one at a time to see if the bus busy status clears.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before repairing communication wiring to prevent module damage.

  2. Inspect the Harness

Visually inspect the main engine wiring harness and CAN bus lines for chafing, melted insulation, or water ingress at the connectors.

  3. Repair/Replace Wiring

If damaged wires are found, splice in a CAN bus repair harness using proper shrink connectors and silicone-insulated wire to maintain the twisted-pair integrity.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors

If the resistance test failed, locate the CAN bus conclusion resistors. Replace any burnt or failed 120-Ohm resistors.

  5. Replace Faulty Modules

If the diagnostic isolation test pointed to a specific module (e.g., the tachograph or instrument cluster), replace the offending module.

  6. Clear and Retest

Reconnect the battery, use an Iveco-compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the 01B7 code, and test drive the vehicle to ensure the code does not return.
