01D8

Iveco 01D8 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) module: Controller: Watchdog firmware restart malfunction

Issue description

Fault code 01D8 indicates an internal failure within the engine controller, specifically logged as "Controller: Fault firmware reboot," "Firmware restart error," or "problem with firmware restart." This means the Engine Control Unit (ECU) experienced an internal watchdog timer trip or synchronization error, forcing the firmware to reboot unexpectedly. It is typically caused by an internal hardware component malfunction or corrupted flash memory/firmware within the ECU.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Tector
  • Iveco S-Way

Check the cause

  1. Check the vehicle's battery voltage and ensure the system voltage is within the operating range of the controller.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and ECU connectors for physical damage, corrosion, or water ingress, which can cause intermittent communication faults or short circuits.

  3. Verify the power supply and ground circuits to the ECU, specifically checking for voltage drops on terminal "15" (ignition power).

  4. Check all related ECU fuses and relays.

  5. Use a professional diagnostic tool (such as Iveco EASY, Bosch KTS, or Texa Navigator) to clear the fault code. If the code immediately returns or the vehicle experiences intermittent starting failures and engine management light illumination, the ECU itself has suffered an internal failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the vehicle's battery (negative terminal first) to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Disconnect the ECU wiring harness

Locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and carefully disconnect the wiring harness connectors.

  3. Remove the faulty ECU

Unbolt and remove the faulty ECU from its mounting bracket.

  4. Repair or replace the ECU

Because this is an internal hardware/firmware fault, the ECU must either be sent to a specialist for internal component repair/cloning or replaced entirely.

  5. Program or clone the replacement ECU

If installing a brand-new or blank replacement ECU, it must be programmed to the vehicle using official Iveco EASY software or a compatible professional diagnostic tool. Alternatively, the data from the original ECU can be cloned to the replacement unit for a "plug-and-play" installation.

  6. Install the ECU

Install the repaired, cloned, or programmed ECU into the vehicle and secure the mounting bolts.

  7. Reconnect the wiring harness

    Reconnect the wiring harness securely.

  8. Reconnect the battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear stored fault codes

Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic scanner to clear any stored fault codes.

  10. Perform a test drive

Start the engine and perform a test drive to ensure the firmware reboot issue is resolved and the engine management light remains off.
