Iveco 01E8 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Controller: voltage type 3 to the sensor supply is out of range
Issue description
The 5V reference circuit designated as 'Sensor Supply 3' is experiencing a voltage irregularity. This is almost always caused by a short to ground, a short to battery voltage within the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor on that specific circuit, or a burned-out power stage inside the controller itself.

Check the cause
Sensor Isolation Test: Turn the ignition ON (engine off). Back-probe the 5V reference wire at one of the accessible sensors on this circuit (e.g., the DPF pressure sensor).
Unplug Sensors Sequentially: Disconnect the sensors on the Supply 3 circuit one by one. If the voltage suddenly returns to a steady 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted and is the culprit.
Harness Inspection: If unplugging the sensors does not restore the 5V reference, use a multimeter to check the wiring harness for continuity to ground or a short to 12V battery power. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block or chassis.
ECU Verification: If all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the EDC module itself has suffered an internal hardware failure on Power Stage 3.
Repair steps
Scan and Confirm
Connect an Iveco-compatible OBD-II diagnostic scanner (like Iveco EASY) to confirm 01E8 is active.
Locate the Short
Perform the sequential unplugging diagnostic check described above.
Replace the Faulty Component
If a sensor is shorted, unbolt the faulty sensor, clean the electrical connector with contact cleaner, and install the replacement part. If the wiring harness is chafed, cut out the damaged section, solder in new wire, seal with heat-shrink tubing, and re-loom the harness away from vibration points. If the ECU is internally damaged, it must be removed and sent to a specialized ECU repair center (who can rebuild the Bosch EDC 5V power stages) or replaced with a cloned/virginized unit.
Clear and Test
Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes from the EDC memory, and cycle the ignition. Start the engine and verify that the EDC warning light remains off and the vehicle is out of limp mode.
