022B

Iveco 022B – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Power circuit fault glow

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical failure, short, or open circuit in the power supply circuit that operates the engine's glow plugs.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Tector
  • Iveco Massif

Check the cause

  1. Turn the ignition to the glow position and check if the dashboard glow plug indicator light illuminates (note: system typically only activates below 10°C/50°F)

  2. Locate the glow plug control relay and test the output terminals with a multimeter to verify voltage is sent to the glow plugs when ignition is on

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the glow plugs and test each plug's resistance with a multimeter (infinite resistance indicates a dead plug)

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EDC, the glow plug relay, and the glow plugs for corrosion, melted pins, or chafing

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the electrical system.

  2. Inspect and Replace the Relay

The most common cause is a failed or 'pasted' (stuck) glow plug control relay/module. Locate the module in the engine bay, disconnect the wiring pigtail, and inspect for melted contacts. Install the replacement control module.

  3. Replace Faulty Glow Plugs (If Necessary)

If the relay is functioning but the plugs tested bad, they must be replaced. Apply a high-quality penetrating oil to the base of the glow plugs and let it soak for several days if possible. Attempt removal on a warm engine, using a torque wrench to ensure you do not exceed the plug's shear torque limit.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and use an OBD2 diagnostic scanner to clear the 022B fault code from the EDC.

  5. ECU Reprogramming (Edge Case)

If the EDC light continues to flash and the code will not clear despite new parts, the ECU may have registered a permanent 'pasted relay' fault requiring a specialized software reprogramming service to reset the EDC module.
