027A

Iveco 027A – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Poor combustion of fuel-air mixture in cylinder 6

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that cylinder 6 is not contributing the expected amount of power to the engine's rotation, which is typically caused by a lack of fuel, poor fuel atomization, lack of compression, or an improper air-to-fuel ratio in that specific cylinder.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Tector / Eurocargo
  • Iveco Eurotrakker
  • Iveco Daily

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Related Codes: Check the EDC for accompanying codes (e.g., 025E, 027C). If electrical codes are present, diagnose the wiring first.

  2. Cylinder Contribution/Balance Test: Use a diagnostic scan tool to run a dynamic cylinder balance test to confirm if cylinder 6 is underperforming.

  3. Wiring and Harness Inspection: Inspect the injector wiring harness for cylinder 6 for chafing, oil intrusion at the connector, or broken pins.

  4. Compression Test: Perform a relative compression test via the scan tool or a manual mechanical compression test on cylinder 6 to rule out mechanical failures.

  5. Fuel Quality and Pressure: Ensure the common rail or unit injector system is receiving adequate fuel pressure and that the fuel is not contaminated.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Vehicle

Disconnect the vehicle's batteries. Clean the area around the valve cover and cylinder 6 to prevent debris from falling into the engine.

  2. Access the Injector

Remove the engine acoustic cover and the valve cover to access the fuel injectors.

  3. Remove the Injector

Disconnect the electrical connector to the cylinder 6 injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bracket. Carefully extract the injector using the appropriate OEM puller tool to avoid damaging the cylinder head.

  4. Inspect the Bore

Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head. Inspect the copper sealing washer at the bottom of the bore; ensure the old washer is removed and the seat is perfectly clean.

  5. Install the New Injector

Lubricate the new O-rings on the replacement injector with clean engine oil. Fit a new copper base washer. Seat the injector into cylinder 6.

  6. Torque to Spec

Install the hold-down clamp and torque the retaining bolt(s) to the exact Iveco OEM specifications (torque values vary depending on whether it is a Cursor unit injector or a Tector common rail injector).

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the injector wiring harness. Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket.

  8. Coding (If Applicable)

If installing a new common rail injector, use a diagnostic tool to program the new injector's IMA/trim code into the EDC so the module can adjust the fueling properly.

  9. Test

Reconnect the batteries, prime the fuel system, and start the engine. Clear the 027A fault code and test drive the vehicle under load to ensure the code does not return.
