Iveco 028B – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Short circuit to ground of the control circuit of the throttle of the recirculation valve

Issue description

The engine's computer has detected that the electrical circuit responsible for opening and closing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) throttle valve actuator has shorted to ground. This prevents the valve from operating correctly, which disrupts the air-fuel ratio and exhaust gas recirculation flow, often resulting in a sudden engine shutdown, a no-start condition, or a severe derate (limp mode).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the EGR throttle valve actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation, or rubbing against the engine block/EGR cooler.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the throttle valve actuator (often a 5-pin connector) and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. With the actuator unplugged, use a multimeter to test the control circuit wires back to the ECU for continuity to ground. If shorted while unplugged, the fault is in the wiring harness.

  4. If the wiring tests fine, suspect an internal short circuit in the EGR throttle valve actuator's H-bridge motor/circuit board.

  5. Check the engine management fuses in the main fuse box, as a dead short in the actuator will often blow the corresponding circuit fuse.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes and ensure safety.

  2. Gain Access

    Locate the EGR throttle valve assembly, which is typically mounted near the intake manifold and EGR cooler piping.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the throttle valve actuator. (If the harness was found to be the issue during diagnostics, splice in a replacement pigtail harness using heat-shrink butt connectors).

  4. Remove the Valve

    Remove the charge air/intercooler hoses connected to the throttle body. Remove the mounting bolts securing the throttle valve to the intake/EGR assembly.

  5. Clean Mating Surfaces

    Remove the old unit and thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces of any carbon buildup or old gasket material.

  6. Install New Parts

    Install the new EGR throttle valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

  7. Reassemble

    Reconnect the air hoses and plug the electrical connector back into the actuator.

  8. Clear Codes and Adapt

    Reconnect the battery. Connect a heavy-duty diagnostic scan tool (e.g., Jaltest, TEXA, or Iveco EASY) to the OBD port. Clear the stored 028B fault code. Run the ECU adaptation/relearn procedure for the new throttle valve so the ECU can learn the new minimum and maximum end-stops.
