Iveco 03F3 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Incorrect signal in the particulate filter debris sensor circuit

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an implausible, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the sensor responsible for monitoring the exhaust pressure difference before and after the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the two rubber/metal pressure hoses connecting the DPF housing to the differential pressure sensor for melting, cracking, or hard soot blockages at the bottom.

  2. Inspect the sensor's electrical pigtail connector and wiring harness for corrosion, chafing against the chassis, or short circuits.

  3. Verify with a multimeter that the sensor is receiving a 5V reference supply from the ECU.

  4. Monitor live differential pressure values and soot accumulation using a diagnostic scanner. If the sensor reads a high pressure value when the engine is completely off, the sensor is internally shorted or faulty.

  5. Check the DPF for severe restriction. An entirely blocked DPF can create extreme backpressure that the ECU interprets as a sensor circuit fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes to the ECU.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the DPF differential pressure sensor. It is usually mounted on the chassis rail or bulkhead near the exhaust system, connected to the DPF via two hoses.

  3. Remove Components

    Unplug the electrical connector. Release the hose clamps and pull the two pressure hoses off the sensor. Mark which hose goes to the upstream port and which goes to the downstream port—reversing them will cause immediate faults.

  4. Clear/Replace Lines

    If the hoses are melted, brittle, or blocked with soot, replace them. If they are intact, blow compressed air through them (away from the sensor) to ensure they are clear.

  5. Install New Sensor

    Mount the new OEM differential pressure sensor. Reattach the hoses with new clamps and plug in the electrical connector.

  6. Relearn Procedure

    Reconnect the battery. Connect your diagnostic scanner, clear the 03F3 fault code, and perform a "Sensor Replacement" or "DPF Reset" adaptation procedure so the ECU learns the zero-pressure voltage of the new sensor.

  7. Forced Regeneration

    Perform a stationary forced DPF regeneration via the diagnostic tool, or take the vehicle for a 20–30 minute highway drive to allow the system to perform an active regeneration and verify the repair.
