03FA

Iveco 03FA – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Low level 2 regeneration particulate filter

Issue description

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has accumulated soot beyond the normal threshold where standard passive or active driving regeneration can clear it, requiring a forced stationary regeneration to prevent severe engine power reduction.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Tector
  • UAZ Patriot (Diesel)

Check the cause

  1. Connect a compatible diagnostic tool and check the live data for DPF soot/ash accumulation levels and differential pressure.

  2. Verify the functionality of the DPF differential pressure sensor and the exhaust gas temperature sensors, looking for related fault codes (e.g., 03F8 or 03F3).

  3. Check the engine oil level and degradation status, as failed regeneration attempts often cause excess diesel fuel to wash into the oil pan.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the vehicle outdoors in a safe, well-ventilated area away from flammable materials, as the exhaust temperatures will become extremely high. Ensure the vehicle has at least a quarter tank of fuel.

  2. Warm-Up

Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.

  3. Forced Regeneration

Using your diagnostic scan tool, navigate to the Engine ECU and select the 'Specific Functions' or 'Adjustments' menu. Initiate a Forced Stationary Regeneration.

  4. Monitor the Cycle

The engine RPM will elevate automatically. Allow the cycle to complete uninterrupted (this typically takes 20 to 40 minutes).

  5. Physical Cleaning/Replacement

If the forced regeneration fails, or if the scan tool indicates the filter is permanently blocked with ash, the DPF must be physically removed to be professionally cleaned (e.g., ultrasonic/ash cleaning) or replaced entirely.

  6. ECU Reset

If the DPF is replaced or cleaned, use the diagnostic tool to reset the DPF regeneration counter. Additionally, perform an engine oil and filter change, and reset the oil degradation counter in the ECU.
