055F

Iveco 055F – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU): Malfunction of the EGR system leading to toxic emissions

Issue description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is failing to properly route exhaust gases back into the intake manifold, resulting in elevated NOx emissions that exceed permissible environmental limits.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Tector

Check the cause

  1. Check the EGR valve for heavy carbon buildup or soot clogging, which is the most common cause of the valve sticking open or closed.

  2. Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness leading to the EGR valve for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Verify that the EGR valve is seated correctly and that there are no exhaust leaks around the mounting flanges.

  4. Use an Iveco-compatible OBD2 diagnostic scanner to command the EGR valve open and closed to see if the internal motor/solenoid responds.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine is completely cool.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the EGR valve assembly, typically mounted near the exhaust manifold or intake manifold crossover pipe.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the EGR valve.

  4. Removal

Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the engine block or cooler. Carefully extract the old EGR valve and discard the old metal gasket.

  5. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the engine block/manifold to remove any carbon buildup or old gasket material. Ensure no debris falls into the intake or exhaust ports.

  6. Installation

Position the new EGR valve with a new OEM gasket. Hand-thread the mounting bolts, then tighten them to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical wiring harness.

  8. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic scanner to clear the 055F fault code. Start the engine and test drive to ensure the code does not return.
