Iveco 06 – ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) Control Unit: Sample values for level sensors

Issue description

The control unit is receiving implausible, out-of-range, or erratic sample values from the suspension height/level sensors. This usually points to a sensor that is worn out, miscalibrated, or suffering from a wiring issue.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Trakker

Check the cause

  1. Read Live Data: Connect a professional diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or Iveco EASY) to the ECAS ECU to read the live voltage values of the height sensors.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the physical condition of the level sensors located on the axles. Check if the sensor linkage arms are bent, broken, or disconnected.

  3. Wiring Integrity: Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the level sensors for corrosion, moisture ingress, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  4. Air System Check: Inspect the air lines, valves, and airbags for leaks, as a mechanical failure preventing the suspension from reaching the target height can sometimes trigger sensor plausibility faults.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Vehicle

Park the truck on a flat, level surface. Safely support the vehicle chassis with heavy-duty stands to prevent the air suspension from suddenly dropping during the repair.

  2. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery or remove the ECAS system fuse to prevent accidental actuation.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty level sensor. Unbolt the sensor linkage arm from the axle mount, then remove the mounting bolts securing the sensor body to the chassis.

  4. Match the Replacement

Verify that the new sensor has the exact same arm length, angle, and connector pinout as the old one. Installing a sensor with a different arm length will trigger immediate fault codes.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Bolt the new sensor to the chassis and reattach the linkage arm to the axle. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. System Calibration

Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on. You must use a diagnostic PC/tool to calibrate the new level sensor and program the normal ride height parameters into the ECAS ECU. The system will not function correctly without this software calibration.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the fault memory using the diagnostic tool. Test the suspension by raising and lowering the vehicle to ensure it reaches the target levels smoothly without triggering the ECAS warning lamp.
