Iveco 060D – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Signal from oxygen sensor 1 is out of range (full load)
Issue description
The engine control system is receiving an implausible or out-of-bounds voltage reading from the upstream Oxygen (O2) / Lambda sensor (Sensor 1, located before the catalytic converter) specifically when the engine is operating under full load conditions.

Check the cause
Scan and Verify: Use an OBD/Iveco diagnostic scanner to confirm 060D is the primary fault. Check for related heater circuit codes (e.g., 0602, 0604) which might indicate a wiring issue rather than a failed sensor element.
Visual Inspection of Wiring: Inspect the wiring harness and the pigtail connector leading to Oxygen Sensor 1. Look for melted wires, chafing, or corrosion inside the electrical connector, as the sensor is exposed to extreme exhaust heat.
Check for Exhaust Leaks: Inspect the exhaust manifold and piping upstream of the O2 sensor. An exhaust leak can introduce outside air, skewing the sensor's readings and triggering an out-of-range code.
Live Data Monitoring: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live voltage data of Sensor 1 while the engine is running (and under load, if possible) to see if the sensor is completely dead, sluggish, or genuinely reading out of the allowable parameters.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Allow the vehicle's exhaust system to cool completely to prevent severe burns.
Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate Sensor 1
Locate the upstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 1). It is positioned on the exhaust pipe/manifold before the catalytic converter.
Disconnect Wiring
Push the release tab and disconnect the sensor's electrical connector. Do not pull directly on the wires.
Remove the Sensor
Use a specialized slotted O2 sensor socket (usually 22mm or 7/8") and a ratchet to unscrew the sensor. Tip: If the sensor is seized due to heat cycling and rust, spray the threads with penetrating oil and let it soak. Running the engine for just a minute to slightly warm the surrounding metal can also help break it loose, but use extreme caution.
Prepare the New Sensor
Apply a small amount of high-temp anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (many premium sensors come with this pre-applied). Crucial: Do not get any anti-seize on the louvered sensor tip, as this will permanently contaminate and ruin the sensor.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it securely with the O2 socket.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and ensure the wiring is routed safely away from hot exhaust components.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use your diagnostic scanner to clear the 060D fault code. Test drive the vehicle under load to ensure the code does not return.
