Iveco 060F – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Oxygen sensor signal 1 is out of range (engine stop)

Issue description

The primary oxygen sensor (Lambda sensor 1, located upstream of the catalytic converter) is sending a voltage signal to the computer that falls outside of the expected or permissible operating parameters, prompting a protective engine stop or severe torque limitation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for Oxygen Sensor 1 for loose connections, corrosion, melted wires, or physical damage

  2. Check for open circuits or short circuits to ground in both the oxygen sensor signal circuit and the heater circuit

  3. Inspect the exhaust manifold and pipes upstream of the oxygen sensor for leaks, which can introduce unmetered oxygen and cause a false lean reading

  4. Use an Iveco-compatible OBD/EDC diagnostic scan tool to monitor live voltage data of Oxygen Sensor 1 to verify if it is dead or sluggish

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate Oxygen Sensor 1. It is threaded into the exhaust manifold or the exhaust downpipe before the catalytic converter/DPF assembly.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector linking the oxygen sensor to the engine wiring harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a specialized 22mm (7/8") Lambda/O2 sensor socket, carefully unscrew the faulty oxygen sensor from the exhaust. Note: If the sensor is seized, penetrating oil and heat may be required.

  5. Prepare the New Sensor

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor tip, as this will ruin it.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in securely and route the wire away from extreme heat sources. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the vehicle, clear the 060F fault code from the EDC, and reset any learned air/fuel adaptations.

  9. Test Drive

    Start the engine, ensure the Check Engine/MIL light remains off, and verify the new sensor's live data is fluctuating normally.
