Iveco 1.00E+04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Increased frequency of rotation of the engine crankshaft
Issue description
The engine RPM has exceeded the maximum permissible limit, or the control module has detected an erratic/implausible signal from the crankshaft position sensor (RPM sensor) that falsely indicates an overspeed condition.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Iveco Daily
- Iveco Eurocargo
- Iveco Stralis
- Iveco Trakker
Check the cause
Verify if a genuine mechanical overspeed event occurred (e.g., improper downshift). If so, the code is protective and the sensor may be fine.
Inspect the crankshaft position sensor for physical damage, heavy dirt, or metallic debris on the magnetic tip.
Check the wiring harness and 3-pin connector between the crankshaft sensor and the ECU for chafing, breaks, or corrosion.
Test the inductive sensor's output signal using an oscilloscope or multimeter while cranking/running to verify a consistent AC voltage pulse.
Inspect the tone ring (flywheel gear rim) for damaged or missing teeth.
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
If an actual overspeed event occurred without engine damage, clear the DTC using a diagnostic tool and test drive to see if it returns.
Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Sensor
Locate the crankshaft position sensor on the engine block near the flywheel. Fitment Note: On certain Iveco Daily engines (like the F1A/F1C), you must remove the oil filter to gain access to the crank sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt and carefully extract the sensor from the engine block.
Install New Sensor
Insert the replacement crankshaft position sensor. Secure the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector. If the oil filter was removed, install a new oil filter and top up the engine oil.
Finalize
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes from the ECU, and run the engine to confirm the repair.
