Iveco 1.00E+06 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Controller: Type 1 voltage for out-of-range sensor power supply

Issue description

The voltage on the 'Type 1' 5V reference circuit is out of its expected operating range. This is almost always caused by a sensor that has shorted internally, pulling the 5V reference voltage down, or a wiring harness short to ground/battery voltage.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and ECU ground for severe voltage drops during engine cranking, which can cause the ECU's internal 5V regulator to drop out

  2. Identify which sensors are on the Type 1 5V supply for your specific engine (commonly Camshaft/Phase, Crankshaft, MAP/Boost, or EGR position sensors)

  3. Back-probe the 5V reference wire at one of the affected sensors with a multimeter to monitor voltage

  4. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, melting, or pinching against the engine block or brackets

Repair steps

  1. Turn the ignition ON (Engine OFF)

    Connect a multimeter to the 5V reference pin of a sensor on the Type 1 circuit (e.g., the Camshaft Phase Sensor).

  2. Disconnect sensors one by one

    Unplug the sensors on the Type 1 circuit one at a time.

  3. Monitor the voltage

    If the multimeter suddenly jumps back up to a steady 5.0V (or the active 01E6 code changes to 'inactive' on your scan tool) when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.

  4. Replace the faulty sensor

    Replace the sensor that was identified as internally shorted.

  5. Test the wiring

    If all sensors are unplugged and the voltage is still out of range, disconnect the main harness from the ECU. Test the Type 1 5V supply wire for continuity to ground or continuity to 12V power. Repair the wiring harness if a short is found.

  6. ECU Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and no sensors are shorted, but the ECU is still outputting an incorrect voltage directly at the ECU pin, the ECU's internal 5V regulator has failed. The ECU will need to be repaired or replaced.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes, and cycle the ignition to verify the code does not return.
