Iveco 1.00E+08 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Controller: Type 3 voltage for out-of-range sensor supply

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit #3 (Sensor Supply 3) is reading outside of its normal operating parameters. This occurs if the voltage on circuit #3 drops too low (short to ground/undervoltage) or spikes too high (short to battery voltage).

Check the cause

  1. Verify the vehicle's main battery voltage and the main power supply to the ECU are within normal limits.

  2. Identify which sensors are on Sensor Supply 3 (e.g., exhaust gas absolute pressure sensor, NOx sensor, or EGR position sensor) and unplug them one by one while monitoring the circuit voltage to isolate a shorted sensor.

  3. Check the wiring harness between the ECU and the sensors for chafing, melting, or corrosion. Test the 5V supply wire for a short to ground or a short to battery voltage.

  4. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECU, turn the ignition ON, and measure the voltage directly at the ECU output pin for Sensor Supply 3 to verify if the ECU's internal power stage has failed.

  1. Disconnect power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal before unplugging any major ECU connectors to prevent voltage spikes.

  2. Consult pinout

    Use the specific engine's wiring diagram to locate the exact pins for Sensor Supply 3 (e.g., on a Bosch EDC17CV41, this might be pin 33 for the exhaust gas pressure sensor).

  3. Test sensors

    Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition ON (engine off). Disconnect the sensors on the circuit one at a time. If disconnecting a sensor clears the active fault or restores the 5V reference, replace that specific sensor.

  4. Test wiring

    If all sensors are disconnected and the fault remains active, perform a continuity and short-circuit test on the wiring harness. Repair any damaged wires, rubbed-through insulation, or corroded connector pins.

  5. Address the ECU

    If the wiring harness is intact, no sensors are shorted, and the 5V supply is still out of range directly at the ECU pins, the ECU's internal power stage 3 is burnt out. The ECU must be sent to a specialist for internal repair or replaced entirely.

  6. Clear and verify

    Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (such as Iveco EASY), and run the engine to ensure the code does not return.
