1.00E+09

Iveco 1.00E+09 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Controller: supply voltage higher than permitted

Issue description

The system voltage reaching the control module has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold, which typically points to an overcharging condition in the vehicle's electrical system (often caused by a failed alternator voltage regulator).

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco S-Way
  • Iveco T-Way
  • Iveco X-Way
  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Tector

Check the cause

  1. Perform a static battery test with the engine off (should read approximately 12.6V for a 12V system or 24V-25V for a 24V system).

  2. Perform a running charging test by starting the engine and measuring voltage at the battery terminals. Voltage climbing excessively (>15V on a 12V system or >28.5V on a 24V system) indicates an overcharging alternator.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the alternator, batteries, and the Engine ECU. Look for any shorts to a higher voltage source or damaged grounds that could cause voltage spikes.

  4. If the alternator is overcharging, check the internal or external alternator voltage regulator as it is the primary suspect.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative terminal(s) of the battery to prevent electrical shorts and protect the ECU from further voltage spikes.

  2. Access the Alternator

Locate the alternator on the engine block. Remove the serpentine/drive belt by releasing tension from the belt tensioner.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Disconnect the main B+ power cable and the electrical connector (e.g., 3-pin LIN/regulator connector) from the rear of the alternator.

  4. Remove or Repair Alternator

Option A (Regulator Replacement): Remove the protective cap, unbolt the regulator from the rear of the alternator housing, and install the new one. Option B (Full Replacement): Unbolt the alternator mounting bolts and remove the entire alternator assembly. Install the new alternator and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connections to the alternator and reinstall the drive belt, ensuring proper routing and tension.

  6. Restore Power & Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery negative terminal(s). Connect an OBD diagnostic scanner to the vehicle, clear the 01E9 fault code, and start the engine.

  7. Verification

Measure the running voltage again to ensure it is now regulating within the permissible limits.
