1.6

Iveco 1.6 – Engine ECU (EDC MS6.2 SW 5.X Control Unit): Steady on: The likelihood of a signal from the brake pedal sensors

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit detects an implausible signal from the dual-circuit brake switch, such as both circuits showing as open or closed simultaneously, or the brake pedal registering as pressed while the accelerator is heavily applied.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Eurotrakker

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual check of the brake lights by pressing the pedal to verify if they illuminate correctly, stay on constantly, or fail to turn on.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the 4-pin connector at the brake pedal switch in the driver's footwell for chafed wires, loose connections, or corrosion.

  3. Test the continuity of the brake switch pins using a multimeter (one pair should have continuity when the pedal is resting, and the other pair when pressed).

  4. Verify if the cruise control has stopped working, as the EDC automatically disables it when a brake switch plausibility fault is present.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Switch

Access the driver's side footwell and locate the brake light switch mounted on the bracket at the top of the brake pedal arm.

  3. Removal

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the switch. Remove the switch from its mounting bracket (usually involves twisting the switch a quarter-turn counterclockwise or depressing locking tabs to pull it out).

  4. Installation

Insert the new brake switch into the bracket and secure it (twist clockwise to lock). Ensure the plunger rests correctly against the brake pedal arm so that it depresses fully when the pedal is released.

  5. Reconnection

Plug the electrical connector back into the new switch and reconnect the negative battery terminal.

  6. Clearing the Code

Clear the EDC fault memory manually via the blink code button or use an Iveco-compatible OBD diagnostic tool like Modus or IWT.

  7. Testing

Start the engine, verify the EDC warning light turns off, check brake light operation, and test drive to ensure cruise control functions normally.
