Iveco 111 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) / Engine ECU: Malfunction of the vehicle speed sensor circuit
Issue description
Communication failure, short circuit (to positive or ground), or open circuit in the wiring between the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located on the transmission and the control modules. This prevents the engine control unit from determining the vehicle's speed, leading to a malfunctioning speedometer, disabled cruise control, and sluggish or difficult shifting.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- Iveco Daily
- Iveco Stralis
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring on the chassis section between the sensor and the main cab connector (Connector 72032) for chafing or cuts.
Disconnect the sensor and use a digital multimeter to check for a 5V reference voltage between the signal wire (Wire 5517 - Orange) and the ground/signal return wire (Wire 0058 - Brown).
Verify power on the supply wire (Wire 5514 - Orange).
Connect a diagnostic tool, take the vehicle for a road test, and compare the speed value read by the ECU to the physical speedometer indication.
If the wiring is intact, back-probe the sensor with an oscilloscope to verify it outputs a square wave frequency that increases with speed.
Repair steps
Repair broken wiring
Locate the break in the chassis harness and splice and solder the broken wires (Orange 5514, Orange 5517, or Brown 0058), sealing them with marine-grade heat shrink. If the break is inaccessible, run a bypass overlay harness from the sensor directly to the cab connector.
Access the transmission
Safely lift and support the vehicle to access the transmission and locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the tail end of the gearbox/transmission.
Remove the old sensor
Disconnect the 4-pin electrical connector from the sensor, remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in the transmission housing, and pull the old sensor out (have a rag ready for weeping transmission fluid).
Install the new sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor and insert it into the transmission, then install and tighten the retaining bolt.
Finalize repair
Reconnect the electrical harness, clear the 0111 fault code via OBD/EDC diagnostics, and test drive to verify speedometer operation.
