Iveco 117 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Incorrect brake pedal switch signal
Issue description
The control unit is receiving an erratic, missing, or implausible electrical signal from the brake pedal switch, which disrupts systems such as brake lights, cruise control, and engine management.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Iveco Daily
- Iveco Trakker
- Iveco Stralis
- Iveco Eurocargo
- Iveco Bus
Check the cause
Visually inspect the brake pedal switch (or dual-switch setup) on the brake pedal bracket under the dashboard.
Perform a mechanical plunger test by pressing the brake pedal to ensure the switch plunger feels positive and moves smoothly without sticking.
Unplug the switch and inspect the wiring harness for chafing, open circuits, or a short circuit to ground/battery voltage.
Clean the switch terminals and wiring connector with electrical contact cleaner, reconnect, and test if the EDC light clears.
Check for simultaneous accelerator pedal codes (like 0113), which could indicate a broader wiring harness issue rather than a faulty switch.
Repair steps
Turn off ignition
Ensure the vehicle ignition is turned off and the key is removed.
Locate switch
Access the driver's side footwell and locate the brake pedal switch mounted to the top of the brake pedal bracket.
Disconnect wiring
Carefully depress the locking tab on the electrical wiring harness and disconnect the plug from the switch.
Remove faulty switch
Remove the faulty switch from the bracket. Depending on the exact model year, this is typically done by twisting the switch a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pulling it out, or by releasing a retaining clip.
Install new switch
Insert the new OEM brake pedal switch into the bracket mounting hole and secure it in place. Ensure the plunger is correctly contacting the pedal arm.
Reconnect wiring
Reconnect the electrical wiring harness until it clicks securely.
Clear fault code
Connect an OBD-II diagnostic scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port and clear the 0117 fault code from the ECU memory.
Verify repair
Start the engine, verify the EDC warning light remains off, and press the brake pedal to confirm the rear brake lights illuminate correctly.
