Iveco 12 – ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) Control Unit: Front Level Sensor Malfunction

Issue description

Break / short circuit on positive side of the front level sensor circuit, indicating an open circuit or a short to battery voltage in the sensor's wiring or internal components.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Daily

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECAS ECU and the front level sensor for any physical breaks, chafing, or a short circuit to the positive side.

  2. With the starter key in the drive position, use a multimeter to verify that the power supply from the control unit is successfully reaching the level sensor.

  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor using a multimeter (nominal resistance values are typically either 120 Ω ±10% or between 4.0 — 7.0 kohms).

  4. Check the sensor connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Safely support the vehicle chassis.

  2. Removal

Unbolt and remove the front level sensor from the chassis/frame before its electrical connector can be safely disconnected.

  3. Disconnection

Once detached from the frame, disconnect the sensor's electrical connector.

  4. Installation

Connect the wiring harness to the new ECAS height sensor, then mount the sensor to the chassis and reinstall the sensor-chassis connecting rods.

  5. Calibration

Re-calibrate the system using a diagnostic tool (such as IVECO IT 2000, MODUS, or TEXA). Lift the chassis, insert the specified mechanical calibration spacers, and then lower the chassis onto the spacers by discharging the air completely. Store the new vehicle height values in the ECAS control unit.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the fault codes from the ECU memory and verify that the suspension warning light on the instrument panel turns off.
