Iveco 136 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Sensor Circuit Malfunction of fuel pressure in the rail

Issue description

The engine computer has detected an irrational, missing, or out-of-range voltage signal (low, high, or no voltage) from the fuel rail pressure sensor, forcing the engine into limp mode.

Check the cause

  1. Wiring and Harness Check: Inspect the 3-wire connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor for a proper 5V reference voltage, a good ground/earth, and a clean signal wire back to the EDC.

  2. Continuity Test: Perform a continuity check of the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the EDC module to rule out a broken wire or short circuit.

  3. Live Data Verification: Use a diagnostic scan tool or oscilloscope to read the live fuel pressure voltage to see if it reads a flat 0.5V (0 bar) while the engine is cranking.

  4. Mechanical Leak Check: Inspect the common rail and injector leak-off pipes for physical fuel leaks that could cause a massive pressure drop.

  5. Inspect the Fuel Pressure Regulator: Check for a failing high-pressure regulator (M-PROP valve) or a stuck mechanical relief valve.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Allow the engine to cool and the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the fuel rail pressure sensor, which is threaded directly into the high-pressure common fuel rail.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Clean the area around the sensor thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel rail. Unscrew the faulty sensor from the rail.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the fuel rail and torque it to the manufacturer's specification. (Note: Do not use liquid thread locker, as it can contaminate the fuel system).

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  7. Calibration / Code Clearing

    Clear the 0136 fault code using an OBD2/Iveco diagnostic scanner. If required, calibrate/relearn the replacement sensor using Iveco's E.A.S.Y. diagnostic software.
