Iveco 141 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Crankshaft Position (Frequency) Sensor Circuit Malfunction or Open

Issue description

The engine control unit is not receiving a valid frequency signal from the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. The circuit is either broken (open), shorted, or the sensor itself has failed, preventing the computer from determining the exact rotational speed and position of the crankshaft.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the crankshaft position sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or breaks.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the sensor connector and the EDC harness. Verify there is no short to ground or open circuit in the signal wires.

  4. Test the sensor's internal resistance (if inductive) or check for a 5V reference and ground (if Hall-effect). Use an oscilloscope while cranking to verify a square wave or AC sine wave is generated.

  5. Ensure the tone ring/reluctor wheel on the crankshaft or flywheel is not damaged, missing teeth, or covered in excessive metallic debris/sludge.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the crankshaft position sensor. Depending on the engine, it is usually mounted on the flywheel bell housing or near the front crankshaft pulley. (Note: On Iveco Daily F1A/F1C engines, you may need to remove the oil filter to gain access to the sensor.)

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place. Gently twist and pull the sensor out of its bore.

  4. Clean the Port

    Wipe the mounting surface and the sensor bore clean of oil and debris to ensure the new sensor seats at the correct depth.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a drop of clean engine oil. Push the sensor into the bore until it sits flush.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

    Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 0141 fault code from the EDC memory. Start the engine to verify the repair.
