Iveco 143 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Camshaft Position (Phase) Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is detecting an improper, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the camshaft position sensor, which is critical for determining engine timing, synchronization, and the correct sequence for fuel injection.

Check the cause

  1. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the camshaft position sensor for chafing, breaks, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Voltage and Ground Test: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground connection when the ignition is turned on.

  3. Continuity Test: Check the continuity of the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the ECU pin to rule out an open circuit or a short to ground.

  4. Mechanical Timing Check: Verify the engine timing. A jumped timing belt or chain can cause synchronization issues between the crankshaft and camshaft, which the ECU may interpret as a sensor fault.

  5. Sensor Inspection: Remove the sensor and check for physical damage, metal shavings, or oil contamination on the magnetic sensor tip.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery to ensure safety and prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the camshaft position sensor on the engine (typically mounted on the cylinder head, camshaft cover, or timing cover).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the engine block or head. Gently pull the old camshaft position sensor out of its mounting hole.

  5. Clean and Prep

    Clean the mounting surface to ensure the new sensor seats flush and properly.

  6. Install New Part

    Insert the new camshaft position sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect the electrical wiring harness until it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use an OBD-II or Iveco-specific diagnostic scanner to clear the 0143 fault code from the ECU memory.

  9. Test

    Start the engine, check for a smooth idle, and verify that the EDC/Check Engine light remains off.
