Iveco 144 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Mismatch probes synchronization signals (frequency and phase)

Issue description

This code indicates a plausibility error between the crankshaft position sensor (which measures engine speed/frequency) and the camshaft position sensor (which measures engine phase). The engine control unit relies on the synchronized signals from both sensors to determine the exact top-dead-center position of the cylinders for fuel injection timing. When these signals do not align, the engine will typically trigger the EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) warning light, experience starting difficulties, and enter a power-reduced limp mode.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco EuroCargo
  • Iveco Tector
  • Iveco Trakker

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 3-pin electrical connectors and wiring harnesses for both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors for internal short circuits, breaks, or mechanical damage.

  2. Test the sensors with a multimeter (a healthy inductive/Hall effect camshaft sensor on certain Daily models should read approximately 320 kOhm).

  3. Check the encoder/phonic wheel on the crankshaft/camshaft for mechanical damage, debris, or broken teeth, which can distort the magnetic signal.

  4. Verify the engine's mechanical timing, as a stretched timing chain or a jumped timing belt will cause the camshaft and crankshaft to physically fall out of sync.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical shorts and reset the EDC module.

  2. Locate sensors

Locate the Crankshaft Position Sensor (typically mounted near the crankshaft pulley or flywheel) and the Camshaft Position Sensor (mounted on the cylinder head/valve cover).

  3. Disconnect connectors

Depress the locking tabs and disconnect the 3-pin oval electrical connectors from both sensors.

  4. Remove fastening screws

Remove the fastening screws securing the sensors to the engine block/head.

  5. Remove sensors

Carefully pull the sensors out of their mounting bores.

  6. Clean mounting surfaces

Clean the mounting surfaces. Ensure no old O-rings or debris are left in the bores.

  7. Install new sensors

Lubricate the new seal rings on the replacement sensors and press them into place.

  8. Tighten screws

Install and tighten the fastening screws to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  9. Reconnect connectors

    Reconnect the 3-pin electrical connectors.

  10. Clear fault code

Reconnect the battery. Connect an OBD diagnostic tool (such as TEXA or Iveco EASY) to clear the stored 0144 fault code from the EDC memory.

  11. Test drive

Start the engine and perform a test drive to ensure the EDC light remains off and full power is restored.
