Iveco 163 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Injector control circuit malfunction 3 / Injector Cylinder 3 / short Circuit
Issue description
Indicates that the fuel injector on cylinder 3 is not operating. The underlying condition is typically an electrical failure, such as a short circuit in the wiring connections, a failed injector coil, or an internal hardware problem within the engine control unit.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the EDC and the cylinder 3 injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a short circuit to ground/power.
Disconnect the injector and EDC connectors to check for corroded, loose, or pushed-out pins.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the terminals of the cylinder 3 injector coil. An out-of-spec reading (dead short or completely open circuit) confirms the injector coil has failed.
If the wiring harness tests perfectly for continuity and the injector coil resistance is within specification, check the EDC for an internal failure on the cylinder 3 driver channel.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes while working on the EDC system.
Access the Injector
Remove the valve cover or engine acoustic covers as necessary to access the fuel injectors.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the injector sub-harness.
Remove the Faulty Injector
If the injector coil failed, disconnect the high-pressure fuel line to cylinder 3. Cap the fuel rail fitting to prevent contamination. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bracket and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.
Prep the Cylinder
Clean the injector bore thoroughly, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and no debris falls into the cylinder.
Install the New Injector
Fit a new copper crush washer and O-rings to the new injector. Seat the injector into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to the OEM specification.
Reassemble
Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (torque to spec) and plug in the electrical connector.
Code the Injector
Reconnect the battery. Using a compatible diagnostic scan tool, enter the new injector's IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) code into the EDC so the module can adjust fueling properly.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 0163 fault code from the EDC memory, prime the fuel system, and start the engine to verify smooth operation and ensure the code does not return.
