Iveco 171 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Malfunction of injector control channel 1

Indicates an electrical or operational failure in the circuit that controls the fuel injector on channel 1 (typically corresponding to cylinder 1). It is frequently accompanied by code 017C. The underlying condition is usually a damaged injector wiring harness, a physically clogged/failed injector, or a damaged driver inside the control module.

   Use a diagnostic scanner to determine if it is a hard fault (permanent electrical break) or a soft fault (intermittent issue from loose connections or chafed wiring)

   Inspect the low-pressure fuel system, including the fuel filter housing and bleed valve, for air leaks which can cause erratic injector behavior

   Visually inspect the injector wiring harness and pigtail leading to injector 1 for brittle wires, oil intrusion, or chafing against the valve cover or engine block

   Test the injector electrically for an internal short or open circuit to determine if the injector itself has failed

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect the vehicle's battery before working on the EDC system or high-voltage injector wiring.

   Access the Injectors

   Remove the engine cover and valve cover (if the injectors are located under the cover, as on many Cursor engines) to access the injector wiring harness.

   Replace the Wiring Harness/Pigtail

   If the wiring is damaged, disconnect the 16-way Bosch connector (or specific injector pigtail). Splice in a new injector pigtail or replace the entire engine injector harness depending on the severity of the degradation.

   Replace or Clean the Injector

   If the wiring is sound, use an injector puller to remove the fuel injector on channel 1. Install a new or remanufactured injector, ensuring the injector seat is perfectly clean and a new copper washer is used.

   Reassemble and Bleed

   Reinstall the valve cover and engine components. Bleed the low-pressure fuel system to ensure no air is trapped in the filter housing or lines.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, connect an OBD-II diagnostic scanner, and clear the 0171 and 017C DTC codes. Run the engine to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
