Iveco 173 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Fault Injector control channel 2

This code indicates an electrical malfunction—such as an open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-range resistance—in the control circuit that commands the fuel injector(s) assigned to channel 2. When this fault is active, the engine will typically run rough, misfire, or drop cylinders, as the ECU cannot properly actuate the affected injector.

   Inspect the nuts fixing the electrical cables onto the injector solenoid for loose connections (should be torqued to 1.5 Nm).

   Measure the resistance across the injector coil pins using a digital multimeter (should be 0.56 to 0.57 Ohms for Cursor pump injectors). An open circuit or dead short indicates a failed injector.

   Check the wiring harness for continuity from the injector plug back to the EDC module (Connector 'A'), looking for chafing, brittle wires, or oil intrusion under the valve cover.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the vehicle's battery negative terminal to prevent electrical arcing or damage to the EDC module.

   Access the Injectors

   Remove the engine valve cover to gain access to the unit injectors and the internal injector wiring harness.

   Isolate the Fault

   Perform the multimeter resistance and continuity checks outlined in the diagnostic section to determine if the harness or the injector is at fault.

   Replace the Harness (If Faulty)

   Disconnect the harness from all injectors and the pass-through connector at the cylinder head. Install the new injector wiring harness, ensuring it is routed away from moving valvetrain components.

   Replace the Injector (If Faulty)

   If the injector solenoid is burnt out, remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the injector using the appropriate puller tool (e.g., Iveco tool 99340051). Install the new injector with new O-rings and copper seals.

   Torque Connections

   Reconnect the electrical ring terminals to the injectors and torque the retaining nuts to exactly 1.5 Nm.

   Reassembly

   Clean the mating surfaces and reinstall the valve cover using a new gasket.

   Reconnect the battery, connect an Iveco diagnostic tool (such as E.A.SY. or IT 2000), clear the 0173 fault code, and run the engine to verify the misfire is resolved.
