Iveco 185 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): High signal level in the mass air flow sensor circuit

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a voltage signal from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically indicates that the sensor's signal wire has a short circuit to a positive voltage source, or that the MAF sensor itself has failed internally.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector at the MAF sensor for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins

  2. Using a multimeter, check the signal wire between the MAF sensor and the ECM for a short circuit to voltage (positive)

  3. Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground (a bad ground can cause the signal voltage to float high)

  4. Briefly inspect the air intake system for severe blockages that could cause erratic sensor readings

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal

This prevents electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor

It is mounted on the air intake duct between the air cleaner box and the throttle body/intake manifold.

  3. Disconnect the 4-pin electrical harness from the MAF sensor

Depress the locking tab and carefully disconnect the harness.

  4. Loosen the hose clamps or retaining screws

These secure the MAF sensor housing to the intake piping.

  5. Remove the faulty MAF sensor assembly

Take the assembly out of the vehicle.

  6. Install the replacement MAF sensor

Crucial: Ensure the directional arrow stamped on the sensor housing points toward the engine (in the direction of airflow).

  7. Tighten the clamps/screws and securely reconnect the electrical connector

    Ensure everything is fastened securely.

  8. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault code, and test drive

Clear the 0185 fault code using a diagnostic scanner, and test drive the vehicle to ensure the code does not return.
