Iveco 188 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Reduced air flow through the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the volume of exhaust gases being recirculated back into the intake manifold is lower than the commanded target. This is typically caused by a physical blockage (carbon buildup) restricting flow, a mechanically stuck EGR valve, or a failing actuator that prevents the valve from opening fully.

Check the cause
Inspect the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and connecting pipes for severe carbon/soot buildup, which is the most common cause of restricted flow.
Use a diagnostic scan tool to command the EGR valve open and closed. Listen for the valve operating and check if the actual position matches the commanded position.
Verify that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensors are reading correctly and are not fouled with oil or soot, as a skewed sensor can falsely trigger an EGR flow code.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the EGR valve for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins that could cause intermittent voltage drops to the valve motor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Remove any engine covers or intake piping obstructing access to the EGR valve.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR valve. Unbolt the EGR valve from the intake manifold and the exhaust/EGR cooler flange.
Cleaning
If the valve is intact but clogged, use a dedicated EGR/carbon cleaner to dissolve the soot. Clean the mating ports on the intake manifold and EGR cooler. If the cooler is completely blocked, it must also be removed and cleaned or replaced.
Replacement
If the valve is mechanically seized, the internal motor has failed, or cleaning does not restore full movement, install a new EGR valve.
Installation
Mount the new EGR valve using new gaskets/seals to prevent exhaust or boost leaks. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassembly & Reset
Reinstall all intake piping and engine covers. Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool, clear the 0188 fault code, and perform an "EGR Valve Adaptation" or "Relearn" procedure so the ECU can learn the closed/open end-stops of the new valve.
