Iveco 192 – EDC: Short-circuit to the control circuit board network turbo

Issue description

An electrical short circuit in the turbocharger control circuit. The system has detected that the voltage signal for the turbocharger boost control solenoid (VGT electro-valve) or the electronic turbo actuator is shorting to the on-board network (either shorted to battery positive or shorted to ground).

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EDC and the turbocharger control valve/actuator for melted insulation, chafing, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the turbo control valve or electronic actuator and use a multimeter to check for an internal short circuit across the component's pins, and verify the 5-volt reference and ground.

  3. Run an active turbo test using Iveco diagnostic software (Modus, IWT, IT2000, or EASY) to see if the actuator responds or immediately shorts.

  4. For pneumatically actuated turbos, check vacuum lines and ensure the pneumatic actuator is not seized, which can cause the control solenoid to overwork and fail electrically.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to prevent further electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Locate the Component

Locate the turbocharger boost control solenoid (usually mounted on the engine bay firewall or near the intake) or the electronic turbo actuator (mounted directly on the side of the turbocharger turbine housing).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed or melted wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using heat-shrink tubing. Replace any blown fuses in the EDC circuit.

  4. Remove the Faulty Valve/Actuator

For a vacuum control solenoid: Disconnect the vacuum hoses, unplug the electrical connector, and remove the mounting nuts/bolts. For an electronic actuator: Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the retaining clip holding the actuator arm (clevis) to the turbo wastegate/VGT linkage. Remove the mounting nuts securing the actuator to its metal cradle and slide it out.

  5. Install the New Component

If installing a new electronic actuator, ensure the new actuator's end-link length matches the old unit by adjusting the nut on the rod. Mount the new actuator/solenoid, secure the clevis clip, and tighten the mounting nuts.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector and any vacuum hoses.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery. Use an OBD2/EDC diagnostic scanner to clear fault code 0192. Perform a test drive to ensure the vehicle has exited limp mode and boost pressure parameters are normal.
