Iveco 21 – ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) Control Unit: Left rear level sensor malfunction (Short to Ground)
Issue description
In the Iveco ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) system, Blink Code 21 translates to a 'Left rear level sensor malfunction'. Specifically, the system has detected that the sensor's circuit has a 'Short to Ground'. The level sensor (also known as a height sensor) measures the distance between the vehicle's axle and chassis, sending this data to the control unit to manage the air suspension's ride height.

Check the cause
Read Fault Memory: Connect a diagnostic tool (such as Iveco E.A.SY., MODUS, or WABCO diagnostic software) to read the active fault memory and confirm the code.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the mechanical linkage (lever) connecting the left rear level sensor to the axle. Ensure it is not physically broken, bent, or disconnected.
Wiring and Connector Check: Because the code specifically indicates a 'Short to Ground', inspect the wiring harness running from the ECAS ECU to the left rear level sensor. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas where the wire might be rubbing against the metal chassis.
Electrical Testing: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to test the wiring harness for continuity to ground. Check the sensor connector pins for moisture ingress, corrosion, or damage.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the vehicle's batteries before performing electrical repairs.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire and secure it away from sharp chassis edges.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring tests fine, the internal circuitry of the sensor has failed and it must be replaced. Disconnect the electrical plug from the left rear level sensor, unbolt the mechanical linkage arm from the suspension/axle, remove the mounting hardware securing the sensor body to the chassis, and remove the old sensor. Mount the new sensor, reattach the mechanical linkage, and reconnect the electrical plug.
System Calibration
Reconnect the batteries. You must use a diagnostic PC/notebook with the appropriate diagnostic software (Iveco or WABCO) to clear the fault memory and calibrate the new sensor. The ECAS system needs to learn the new sensor's parameters to establish the correct target ride height.
