Iveco 225 – Engine Control Unit (EDC / ECM): Main Relay Control Circuit Malfunction

The control unit has detected an open circuit, short circuit, or unexpected voltage drop on the control side of the main relay. Because this relay acts as the primary power gateway, a malfunction here often causes the engine to stall abruptly (as if the ignition was turned off) or fail to start entirely.

   Test the EDC Main Relay by swapping it with a known good relay of the same amperage to see if the fault clears

   Inspect the wiring harness near the EDC control unit for chafed, broken, or corroded wires, specifically at the bend under the protective corrugated conduit

   Check for shared circuit shorts by disconnecting the intake manifold heater, alternator plug, and accelerator pedal connector one by one to see if the relay stabilizes

   Verify the main battery ground and the manual battery isolator switch (mass switch) for intermittent power cuts that mimic an ignition cut-off

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Relay Panel

   Open the fuse/relay box (on Stralis and Trakker models, this is often on the left side of the vehicle near the batteries).

   Replace the Main Relay

   Remove the EDC Main Relay. Inspect the socket terminals for signs of melting, arcing, or green corrosion. Clean the terminals with electrical contact cleaner. Install a new OEM main relay.

   Repair Wiring

   If harness damage was found during the diagnostic phase (especially near the EDC connector), cut back the damaged wire, solder in a new section, seal it with dual-wall heat shrink, and re-wrap the harness in protective loom.

   Clean Connectors

   Unplug the accelerator pedal and EDC connectors, treat them with electrical contact spray, ensure the pins are tight, and reconnect them.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as Texa, Iveco EASY, or Jaltest) to clear the 0225 fault code. Start the engine and monitor for unexpected stalling.
