Issue description

This code indicates that the actual fuel pressure inside the common rail (the "ramp") has exceeded the maximum target pressure commanded by the engine control module. This over-pressurization is typically caused by a mechanical restriction in the fuel return system, a stuck fuel pressure regulator, or a faulty sensor providing an artificially high reading.

Check the cause

  1. Live Data Monitoring: Connect a diagnostic scanner and compare the 'Desired Fuel Rail Pressure' against the 'Actual Fuel Rail Pressure' while idling and under load.

  2. Sensor Verification: Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor reading with the engine off (Key On, Engine Off). If the sensor shows high pressure when the system is depressurized, the sensor or its wiring is faulty.

  3. Wiring & Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors for both the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve (MPROP) for corrosion, chafing, or short circuits.

  4. Fuel Return Line Check: Disconnect the return line and check for physical blockages. A blocked or kinked fuel return line will prevent excess fuel from returning to the tank, causing a massive pressure spike.

  5. Regulator Inspection: Remove the Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve from the high-pressure pump and inspect the micro-screen for metal shavings or debris, which can cause the valve to stick closed.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Fuel System Pressure

    Ensure the engine is off and the vehicle has sat long enough for the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize.

  2. Clear Return Lines

    If diagnostic checks revealed a blocked return line, clear the blockage using low-pressure compressed air (blow back toward the fuel tank with the filler cap removed) or replace the crushed/kinked line.

  3. Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the regulator on the high-pressure fuel pump. Remove the mounting bolts (usually Torx or Allen). Twist and pull the valve out carefully. Lubricate the O-rings on the new regulator with clean diesel fuel and press it firmly into the pump. Torque the bolts to OEM spec.

  4. Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor located on the fuel rail. Use a deep socket to unscrew the sensor. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications (do not overtighten, as this can damage the rail threads).

  5. Bleed the System & Test

    Turn the ignition on and off several times to allow the low-pressure lift pump to prime the system. Start the engine, check for leaks, and use a diagnostic scanner to clear code 0251. Test drive the vehicle while monitoring live fuel pressure data to ensure it matches the ECU's requested parameters.
