Iveco 276 – Engine ECU (Electronic Diesel Control - EDC): Poor combustion of the fuel-air mixture in cylinder 2

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine control module has detected that cylinder 2 is not contributing properly to the engine's power output or combustion process. This is typically caused by a faulty fuel injector (Cylinder 2), low cylinder compression (worn rings, blown head gasket, burnt valves), or a wiring/communication issue with the injector circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Daily
  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Eurocargo

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Secondary Codes: Check for accompanying codes such as injector circuit faults (e.g., short to ground/battery) or misfire codes, which can help isolate an electrical issue from a mechanical one.

  2. Live Data Review: Use a diagnostic scan tool (like Iveco EASY or IT 2000) to perform a live-data fuel trim and cylinder contribution review to verify cylinder 2's performance.

  3. Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to the cylinder 2 fuel injector for chafing, corrosion, or open/short circuits.

  4. Compression Test: Perform a cylinder compression test to rule out mechanical failures such as worn piston rings, a blown head gasket, or burnt valves in cylinder 2.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the vehicle battery. Remove engine covers and any components obstructing access to the fuel rail and injectors.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the cylinder 2 injector to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the open cylinder.

  3. Disconnect Lines

Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 2 injector. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line from the injector and the fuel rail. Cap the fittings immediately to prevent contamination.

  4. Remove Injector

Remove the injector hold-down clamp or bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head (an injector puller tool may be required if carbon buildup has seized it).

  5. Clean Bore

Remove the old copper sealing washer from the injector bore (if it didn't come out with the injector) and clean the bore thoroughly.

  6. Install New Injector

Install a new copper washer on the new/remanufactured injector. Insert the injector into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to the OEM specification.

  7. Reassemble

Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec. Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  8. ECU Coding (Crucial)

You must code the new injector's IMA code (calibration code printed on the injector body) into the Engine ECU using a compatible diagnostic scan tool. Failure to do so will result in poor running and recurring codes.

  9. Test

Bleed the fuel system if necessary, start the engine, check for leaks, and clear the 0276 fault code.
