Iveco 279 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / EDC): Poor combustion of the fuel-air mixture in cylinder 5

Issue description

The engine control system has detected a misfire, an imbalance, or a lack of expected power contribution specifically from cylinder number 5. This is typically caused by a faulty fuel injector, clogged injector nozzle, poor fuel quality, or a loss of compression in that cylinder.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Daily
  • Cursor engines (Cursor 8, 9, 10, and 13)
  • Tector engines
  • NEF engines

Check the cause

  1. Check the fuel filter for blockages or heavy contamination. Verify that the vehicle has not been filled with poor-quality diesel or water-contaminated fuel.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to the cylinder 5 injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.

  3. Check the EGR valve to ensure it is not stuck open, and inspect the turbocharger vacuum lines/boost pressure, as air starvation can cause poor combustion.

  4. Run a cylinder contribution/balance test using a diagnostic scanner. Consider running an injector cleaner through the system or removing the injector to have it ultrasonically cleaned and flow-tested.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the vehicle's battery. Ensure the engine is cool (though some mechanics note that a warm engine can make extracting a seized injector easier). Clean the area around the valve cover to prevent debris from entering the engine.

  2. Access

Remove the engine valve cover/cylinder head cover to access the fuel injectors.

  3. Disconnection

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 5 injector.

  4. Removal

Remove the injector hold-down clamp or bracket. Use a specialized injector puller tool (e.g., Iveco tool 99390804) to extract the injector from the cylinder head. Note: If the injector is heavily carbon-seized, penetrating oil and a slide hammer may be required.

  5. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the injector sleeve/cup in the cylinder head to remove all carbon deposits (using a tool like Iveco 99390805).

  6. Installation

Lubricate the new O-rings/seals and install the new or remanufactured injector into cylinder 5.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque it to the manufacturer's exact specifications. Reconnect the electrical wiring.

  8. Finalization

Reinstall the valve cover, reconnect the battery, clear the 0279 fault code using a diagnostic tool, and test-drive the vehicle to ensure the smoke clears and power is restored.
