Iveco 286 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Signal flow sensor out of range

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving an invalid, erratic, or out-of-bounds voltage/frequency signal from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. This condition disrupts the engine's air-fuel mixture calculations, often resulting in limp mode, rough idling, poor acceleration, or black smoke from the exhaust.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the air intake system for vacuum leaks, intake boot damage, or a severely clogged air filter, as restricted or unmetered airflow will skew sensor readings.

  2. Inspect the MAF sensor electrical connector and wiring harness for moisture, corrosion, rodent damage, or loose pins.

  3. Connect an OBD2 scan tool and monitor the MAF sensor PID. At idle, the reading should typically be between 2 to 7 g/s and rise smoothly to between 15 to 25 g/s at 2500 rpm. If the signal drops to zero or is not linear, the sensor is likely damaged.

  4. Perform an unplug test by disconnecting the MAF sensor while the engine is running. If the engine performance remains unchanged or improves, the sensor is likely faulty.
