Iveco 287 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Increased air flow through the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve

Issue description

The engine's mass airflow (MAF) sensor or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor is detecting more fresh air entering the intake than expected when the engine commands the EGR valve to open. This typically indicates that the EGR valve is stuck closed, clogged with carbon, or the EGR cooler is blocked. Because exhaust gases are prevented from entering the intake manifold, the engine compensates by drawing in a higher volume of fresh air.

Check the cause

  1. Check the TVA (Throttle Valve Actuator) flap to ensure it is not stuck open or shorted, as it works in tandem with the EGR valve to balance fresh air and exhaust gas.

  2. Remove the EGR valve and inspect both the valve and the EGR cooler for severe carbon blockages.

  3. Verify that the Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor is reading correctly to rule out a faulty sensor falsely reporting increased airflow.

  4. Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness leading to the EGR valve for shorts to ground or open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shock or accidental engine cranking.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the EGR valve near the intake manifold or at the rear of the engine block.

  3. Clear Access

    Remove any obstructing hoses, air intake pipes, or wiring harnesses to gain access to the EGR mounting bolts.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator.

  5. Remove the Valve

    Unbolt the EGR valve from the intake manifold and the exhaust piping/EGR cooler.

  6. Clean the Port

    If replacing the valve, thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the intake manifold and exhaust pipe to ensure a proper seal.

  7. Install New Valve

    Install the new EGR valve using new gaskets/seals. Do not reuse old metal gaskets.

  8. Reassembly

    Reconnect the exhaust piping, tighten the mounting bolts to OEM torque specifications, and plug the electrical connector back in.

  9. ECU Adaptation

    Reconnect the battery. Note that for some replacement valves (like VDO units), the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software must be 'trained' or adapted to the new valve using a diagnostic scan tool.

  10. Clear Codes

    Clear the 0287 fault code from the EDC memory and test drive the vehicle to ensure the code does not return.
