Iveco 389 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Recirculation valve open state or high temperature

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an open electrical circuit in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve actuator/solenoid, meaning the signal is missing or the connection is broken. Alternatively, it can be triggered if the system detects abnormally high exhaust gas temperatures.

Check the cause

  1. Read Active Codes: Verify if the code is active (ATT) or stored in memory (MEM). If the engine struggles to start cold, stutters, and triggers the yellow MIL and red EDC lights with an 'avaria 137' dash warning, the EGR circuit is actively failing.

  2. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EGR solenoid valve. Look for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or corroded pins that would cause an 'open circuit' (signal missing).

  3. Actuator Continuity Test: Use a multimeter to test the EGR valve's internal solenoid for continuity. If the circuit is completely open (infinite resistance), the electronic actuator inside the EGR valve has failed.

  4. Temperature Sensor Check (High Temperature Cause): Because the code can also relate to high exhaust temperatures, verify the live data from the exhaust gas temperature sensor to ensure it is reading correctly and not shorted/open.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine is completely cool.

  2. Locate the EGR Valve

    Locate the EGR valve assembly in the engine bay, typically mounted near the intake/exhaust manifold and connected to the EGR cooler.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator.

  4. Remove Hardware

    Unbolt the EGR exhaust gas recirculation pipe flange that connects the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. Remove the primary mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the engine block/manifold.

  5. Remove the Valve

    Pull the old EGR valve away from the engine. Discard the old metal gaskets, as they should never be reused.

  6. Clean Mating Surfaces

    Thoroughly clean the carbon buildup and old gasket material from the manifold and cooler mating surfaces to ensure a proper seal.

  7. Install New Valve

    Position the new EGR valve with new gaskets in place. Hand-thread the mounting bolts to prevent cross-threading, then torque them to the manufacturer's specifications.

  8. Reassemble

    Reattach the EGR pipe and tighten the flange bolts. Reconnect the electrical plug to the new EGR actuator.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect an OBD diagnostic tool to the vehicle and clear fault code 0389 from the ECU memory.

  10. Test Drive

    Start the engine (check for smooth cold idle) and ensure the MIL/EDC warning lights remain off.
