Iveco 392 – Engine Control Unit (EDC): Short circuit to on-board network of the turbocharger control circuit and high temperature.
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine control system has detected a short circuit to power (the on-board voltage network) within the turbocharger control circuit. The 'high temperature' designation typically means the short circuit has caused the actuator/solenoid to overheat, or the system is registering an abnormally high temperature reading at the turbocharger due to the electrical fault. This prevents the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) or wastegate from regulating boost pressure properly, often forcing the vehicle into a torque-limited 'limp mode'.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Iveco Daily
- Iveco Stralis
- Iveco Trakker
- Iveco Eurocargo
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the EDC to the turbocharger control valve or VGT actuator for chafed insulation, melted wires, or shorts to a 12V/24V power source or hot exhaust components.
Disconnect the plug at the turbo actuator or boost control solenoid and inspect for melted pins, water ingress, or heavy corrosion that could bridge the power and control circuits.
Use a multimeter to test the internal resistance of the turbocharger control valve or electronic VGT actuator to check for an internal short circuit within the motor or solenoid coil.
Verify the readings of the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor and turbo temperature sensors via a diagnostic scan tool to ensure a secondary sensor hasn't failed or melted alongside the actuator.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent further electrical damage.
Access the Turbocharger
Locate the turbocharger control valve (often mounted on the chassis or near the turbo on Daily models) or the electronic VGT actuator (mounted directly on the turbocharger on Stralis/Cursor models).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the valve/actuator. If working on a vacuum-actuated electro-valve, mark and disconnect the vacuum lines. If working on a fully electronic VGT actuator, carefully disconnect the mechanical linkage arm to the turbo vanes.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, cut out the damaged section and solder/heat-shrink new wiring, ensuring it is routed away from extreme heat sources.
Replace the Component
Unbolt the faulty control valve or actuator bracket and remove the unit. Install the new OEM replacement part and secure the mounting bolts.
Reassemble
Reattach the vacuum lines or mechanical linkage. Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Clear and Test
Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the OBD port, clear the EDC fault codes, and perform a test drive while monitoring live boost pressure data to confirm the repair. (Note: Some heavy-duty electronic VGT actuators may require calibration via the scan tool upon installation).
