Iveco 603 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): The signal from oxygen sensor 1 is out of range.

Issue description

The engine's computer is receiving a voltage signal from the upstream oxygen (O2) sensor (Sensor 1, located before the catalytic converter) that falls outside the expected operating parameters. When the signal is out of range, the engine cannot dynamically adapt to changing conditions, which can lead to poor fuel economy, rough idling, or a loss of power.

Check the cause

  1. Check the plug socket for the sensor. Pull the connector apart, use an electrical contact cleaner, and blow it out to remove any moisture or debris. Inspect the wiring harness for any melted wires, shorts, or open circuits.

  2. Use an OBD2 scanner or a digital multimeter to read the live data of Sensor 1. A healthy narrowband O2 sensor should produce a rapidly oscillating waveform at idle, making voltage transitions from near minimum (0.1V) to near maximum (0.9V). If the voltage is stuck, sluggish, or completely out of this range, the sensor is likely internally contaminated or dead.

  3. Look for accompanying codes (such as P0135, P0031, P0141, or P060F) which can point specifically to heater circuit failures or overrun conditions.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    Locate Oxygen Sensor 1 (Upstream). It is threaded into the exhaust manifold or the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter.

  2. Prepare for Removal

    Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical shorts and to help reset the ECU's learned parameters.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

    Unplug the 5-wire/6-pin electrical connector linking the O2 sensor to the engine wiring harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a specialized 7/8" (22mm) oxygen sensor socket or a wrench, carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust. Note: These can be heavily corroded; penetrating oil and heat may be required.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new oxygen sensor into the exact same location and orientation. Tighten it to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Route the wiring away from extreme heat sources.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use an OBD2 diagnostic scanner to clear the 0603 fault code from the EDC/ECU memory. Start the engine and verify that the EDC warning light remains off.
