606

Iveco 606 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): The fault signal circuit or loss of activity of the oxygen sensor 1

Issue description

The engine control system is no longer receiving a valid, fluctuating signal from the primary upstream oxygen (O2) sensor, or there is a physical break/short in the sensor's wiring circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Iveco Stralis
  • Iveco Trakker
  • Iveco Eurocargo
  • Iveco Daily

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness for Oxygen Sensor 1 for open circuits, worn-through wires, or a short circuit to ground (short to the weight of the heater circuit)

  2. Verify the voltage control in the circuit at the sensor connector (open-circuit voltage should measure approximately 3.8 volts)

  3. Ensure there are no excessive exhaust temperature issues or other underlying faults affecting the fuel report

  4. Inspect the exhaust pipe for heavy carbon deposits that could be blinding the sensor

Repair steps

  1. Verify Compatibility

Confirm the OE part number of the new sensor exactly matches the original part being removed.

  2. Pre-Installation Inspection

Double-check the vehicle's wiring integrity one last time before installing the new sensor.

  3. Removal

Remove the defective oxygen/NOx sensor. Do not use an impact wrench, as this can damage the exhaust threads and void warranties.

  4. Preparation

Clean and remove any carbon deposits from the exhaust pipe mounting port prior to installation.

  5. Installation

Install the new sensor carefully. Crucial: Do not make direct finger contact with the ceramic probe, as oil contamination from your skin will cause the new sensor to fail.

  6. Connection

Securely connect the wiring harness and verify the connection is tight.

  7. Clear Codes

Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (e.g., Jaltest, MaxiEcu, or Iveco E.A.S.Y.) to the OBD port and clear the stored EDC fault codes.

  8. Testing

Perform a power activation and functional test run to ensure the code does not return.
