Iveco 607 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / ECM): Oxygen sensor 1 signal is out of range.

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving a voltage or current signal from the upstream oxygen sensor (Lambda sensor 1, located before the catalytic converter or DPF) that falls outside the manufacturer's permissible operating parameters. This can be caused by a degraded sensor element, a wiring/circuit fault, or an extreme air/fuel mixture imbalance (such as an exhaust leak introducing unmetered air).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector for Oxygen Sensor 1 for melted wires, corrosion in the pins, or chafing against hot exhaust components.

  2. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the oxygen sensor (e.g., cracked manifold or blown gasket) which can introduce outside oxygen and cause out-of-range readings.

  3. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the Engine ECU and view live data for Oxygen Sensor 1 to verify if the signal is completely dead, stuck, responding too slowly to throttle changes, or pegged at an extreme voltage.

  4. Verify that the sensor is receiving proper ground and reference voltage from the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the vehicle's battery. Ensure the exhaust system has cooled down completely to prevent burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate Oxygen Sensor 1. It is the upstream sensor threaded into the exhaust pipe or manifold before the catalytic converter/DPF.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unclip and disconnect the sensor's electrical harness connector.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a specialized oxygen sensor socket (typically 22mm or 7/8") and a breaker bar, carefully unscrew the sensor. Note: If the sensor is seized, apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak before attempting removal.

  5. Clean the Port

    Inspect the threads in the exhaust bung and clean them with a thread chaser if necessary.

  6. Prepare the New Sensor

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor. (Note: Many OEM replacement sensors come with anti-seize pre-applied. Do not get any compound on the sensor tip).

  7. Installation

    Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  8. Reconnect

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the wire is routed securely away from extreme heat sources.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic scanner to clear the 0607 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the engine and verify proper operation via live data.
