7.4

Iveco 7.4 – Engine ECU (IVECO EDC MS6.2 SW 5.X): lights up CAN line (EBS control)

Issue description

CAN bus communication failure between the engine management system and the vehicle's braking system. The engine controller is reporting that it has lost the expected data exchange (or experienced a timeout) over the CAN network from the Electronic Braking System (EBS) module.

Applies to these machines

  • IVECO Stralis
  • IVECO Trakker
  • IVECO EuroTech
  • IVECO EuroCargo
  • Astra heavy-duty models

Check the cause

  1. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the ignition OFF and batteries disconnected. Measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port or module connector (should read approximately 60 Ohms). If it reads ~120 Ohms, there is an open circuit or a damaged terminating resistor. If it reads ~0 Ohms, CAN High and CAN Low are shorted together.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EDC MS6.2 and the EBS control unit for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins, particularly near the steering column and chassis transition points.

  3. Verify that the EBS control unit is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Use a heavy-duty diagnostic scanner to scan the EBS module directly. If the scanner cannot communicate with the EBS, the fault is isolated to the EBS module or its direct wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the vehicle's batteries to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or break in the CAN lines, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness and replace any corroded connector pins.

  3. Replace the EBS Control Unit

If the wiring, power, and grounds are intact but the EBS module is internally faulted or unresponsive, remove the defective EBS control unit. Install the replacement unit securely.

  4. Reconnect and Code

Reconnect the battery. If the EBS module was replaced, it must be parameterized/coded to the specific vehicle using an OEM-level diagnostic tool.

  5. Clear Faults

Clear the fault memory in both the EDC (Engine) and EBS (Brakes) control units.

  6. Test Drive

Perform a functional test drive to ensure the CAN communication fault does not return and that the ABS/EBS systems are operating correctly.
