Iveco 7.5 – Engine Control Unit (EDC) MS6.2 (SW 5.X): Lights up CAN line (intarder control)

Issue description

Communication failure on the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus specifically between the engine management system and the Intarder (retarder) Control Unit. The engine controller is unable to send or receive expected data messages (such as torque requests or speed signals) to/from the intarder module over the CAN data link.

Applies to these machines

  • IVECO Trakker
  • IVECO Stralis
  • IVECO Eurocargo
  • Astra HD8
  • Astra HD9

Check the cause

  1. Perform a full system scan using a diagnostic tool to check for other CAN line codes (e.g., 7.2, 7.3, 7.4) which may indicate the entire CAN bus is down

  2. Inspect the physical wiring harness between the EDC and the Intarder Control Unit for pinched wires, chafing, or corrosion, especially behind battery shelves or frame rails

  3. With batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across CAN High and CAN Low at the Intarder control unit connector (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  4. Verify the Intarder Control Unit is receiving proper voltage (+15 and +30 terminal supplies) and has a clean, short ground

  5. Check the ST26A/ST26B junction connectors and the EOL data entry line (Pin 4, K line 2293) for pushed pins or moisture intrusion

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the vehicle batteries before servicing the CAN bus or control units.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken, corroded, or shorted wire on the CAN High or CAN Low lines between the EDC and the Intarder ECU, repair the wiring using OEM-approved sealed splices.

  3. Clean Connectors

If moisture or corrosion is found at the Intarder Control Unit socket, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Replace Intarder Control Unit

If power, ground, and CAN wiring are all intact but the Intarder ECU fails to communicate with the EDC, the module itself has failed. Disconnect the multi-pin harness from the Intarder ECU, unbolt the module from its mounting bracket, install the replacement unit and reconnect the harness.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the batteries. Turn the ignition on and use the diagnostic tool (or the steering wheel menu / EDC test button) to clear the fault memory. Start the engine and verify that the EDC warning light remains off and the intarder functions correctly during a test drive.
