Iveco 7.6 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / IVECO EDC MS6.2 SW 5.X Control Unit: steady on CAN error (data exchange with other control units)

Issue description

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus architecture. The engine control unit is unable to successfully exchange data messages with other vehicle control modules on the network, such as the Eurotronic transmission control, EBS (Electronic Braking System) control, or Intarder control.

Applies to these machines

  • IVECO Trakker
  • IVECO Stralis
  • IVECO Eurocargo
  • IVECO Astra

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN Line Wiring: Inspect the physical CAN bus wiring (twisted pair cables) between the EDC MS6.2 and other interfacing control units (EBS, Eurotronic, Intarder) for breaks, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  2. Inspect Connectors: Check the plugged connections and electric connections to the EDC MS6.2 central unit. Look for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins. Measurements should only be made on proper testing lines with special plugs.

  3. Check Battery Voltage: Ensure the vehicle has proper voltage, as low voltage can disrupt CAN communication (related EDC code 3.5 is for Battery Voltage).

  4. Check for Related Module Faults: Verify if the EDC is logging related internal errors, such as code 9.1 (Control unit defective) or 9.2 (Erroneous data in EEPROM), which would point to a failed ECU rather than a wiring issue.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the starting battery before performing any electrical repairs or unplugging the EDC MS6.2 central unit.

  2. Isolate the Fault

If the CAN wiring harness is visually intact, isolate the CAN bus by disconnecting other control units (like the EBS or Eurotronic modules) one by one to see if a corrupted module is pulling the CAN network down.

  3. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If a wiring fault is found, repair the CAN bus harness. Ensure that any repaired CAN wires maintain their twisted-pair configuration to prevent electromagnetic interference. Clean any corroded connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.

  4. Replace the ECU (if necessary)

If the wiring is perfectly intact, terminating resistance is correct, and the EDC MS6.2 is failing to transmit/receive data (or has internal EEPROM errors), the EDC MS6.2 unit must be replaced.

  5. Clear the Fault Memory

After the repair, clear the failure memory. This can be done using the IVECO MODUS / E.A.SY. diagnostic instruments or via the manual "Procedure for failure memory clear by Blink Code key".
